Syringe Exchange Program

Despite their remarkable success in disease prevention, syringe exchange programs (SEPs) directly reach between 5-10% of active injection drug users. Secondary syringe exchange (SSE) refers to a range of formal and informal practices through which syringe exchange participant’s re-distribute sterile syringes to peers within social and drug-using networks.

GHHRC’s Syringe exchange will support these Secondary networks with sterile equipment and tailored services, in addition to offering individual Syringe exchange services to others on an on-call as needed basis by telephone or appointment at our main office..

You can access these services anytime by calling 860-250-4146. With changing communities, gentrification, and shifting drug trends, it is clear that public health policies must respond by promoting practices that reach the most at-risk communities. Research has shown that SSE is a highly effective strategy for expanding the coverage to deliver safer injection materials and information to this highly vulnerable population.

HIV Prevention Education and Testing

GHHRC promotes the total health and well being of our clients and community through the provision of health education and tiered risk reduction programs. Through various partnerships our program seeks to empower adults in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of substance use, HIV/AIDS, STIs, hepatitis, and other communicable diseases.

We also utilize our mobile unit to do street outreach within the Violence Free Zone or “VFZ”. Given the demographics of our core population, and this population's HIV prevalence and risk profile, all of our activities are designed to reduce disparities, drug-related harms, and health problems among HIV-positive substance users, MSM, sex workers, and homeless individuals; including but not limited to testing for HIV/AIDS, viral Hepatitis, STIs, and other communicable diseases, distributing condoms and facilitating a syringe exchange program for IDU’s.

Drug Treatment Access and Referrals

“WE GET IT” One of our core strengths is our ability to engage people in their own place, space and time. Our team of Drug Treatment Advocates is among the most experienced in the region. We believe that “No One Seeking Treatment should ever be denied a Shot at Hope”. The Northeast Neighborhood has the highest crime rate in the city. The VFZ is home to more than 3,400 of our children and young adults. The opportunity is tremendous.

The National Violence Free Zone or VFZ model was developed more than two decades ago to help low-income neighborhoods address problems such as violent crimes, drug abuse, and other quality of life issues. Importantly, it is implemented by local organizations – the true neighborhood experts – working in close partnerships.

O.P.E.N Access

O.P.E.N. stands for Overdose Prevention, Education and Naloxone Access. We aim to educate and equip residents with the tools necessary to prevent opioid-related overdoses through the use of Naloxone.

Safer Sex Kits

Safer sex supplies won't do any good if they aren't on hand when people need them. We have condoms, latex dams, gloves, lube, and other safer sex supplies so your always prepared.
