STANDING IN THE GAP

What is Harm Reduction?

Harm Reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm Reduction is also a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs, those that experience homelessness, and sex workers.

Never use alone: No judgement, no shaming, no preaching, just love

If you are going to use by yourself, call the Never Use Alone hotline. You will be asked for your first name, location, and the number you are calling from. Their operations will stay on the line while you use. If you stop responding after use, the operator will notify emergency services of an “unresponsive person” at your location.

Syringe Service Programs (SSP)

SSPs are community-based prevention programs that can provide a range of services, including linkage to substance use disorder treatment; access to and disposal of sterile syringes and injection equipment; and vaccination, testing, and linkage to care and treatment for infectious diseases.

Nearly thirty years of research shows that comprehensive SSPs are safe, effective, and cost-effective, do not increase illegal drug use or crime, and play an important role in reducing the transmission of viral hepatitis, HIV, and other infections (CDC).
